Overview
New Bombay Keraleeya Samaj, Nerul (popularly known as NBKS) took birth behind shopping centre compound wall of Sector-9 Nerul at a meeting of enthusiastic Malayalees to setup a Socio-Cultural body to work for the welfare of Malayalees in and around area of Navi Mumbai in the early of 1985. The Samajam was registered under Society Act 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 in February 1986. Thus the journey of our Samaj started by dedicated past members. In the beginning one of our principal aims of fostering among Malayalees in the city, the Samajam celebrated Onam, Kerala's harvest festival as an annual event in the year 1987 at At.Xavier School Ground, which continues to be observed on a grand style.
During these 35 years NBKS endeavoured to enrich the social and cultural life of Nerul and effectively project the Art and Culture of Kerala to the people of Nerul, Navi Mumbai as well as to the outside world. It aims at promoting national integration, social, welfare, educational and advancement, women's empowerment and fostering a sense of fraternity among the people without any barrier of religion, caste, creed, politics or social status.
The organizational structure of NBKS is federal in nature. NBKS is governed by an annually elected committee and function through various sub committees to teach activities. Presently Managing committee consisting of 30 members. Eminent persons from all walks of life have been actively involved in shaping and patronising the activities of NBKS from the beginning. With the support of members we have completed construction of our complex in a plot of 485 sq.mt. allotted by CIDCO Ltd. The new premises of the Samaj Complex was inaugurated by Shri O.Rajagopal, Minister of State for Defence in the year 2003. Great relief was the Grant of Rs.14.25 lakhs received from Cultural Dept., Govt.of India. The Samaj also owes a deep debt of gratitude to our members, well wishers of Mumbai who have helped to build this organisation.
